Practical Hands-On Activities
Effleurage (Light Stroking Movements)

Used as the primary technique in MLD, effleurage is performed with very light pressure to stretch and move the skin in the direction of lymph flow. It helps initiate lymph movement, promote relaxation, and prepare the body for deeper drainage work.
Stationary Circles and Pump Movements

These signature MLD techniques involve gentle circular or pumping motions using the hands or fingers. They create a wave-like effect that encourages lymph fluid movement through superficial vessels.
Scoop and Rotary Techniques

Using the palms or fingertips, these slow, sweeping motions are applied in a rhythm that matches the body’s natural lymphatic rhythm. They are particularly effective for limb swelling, facial puffiness, and detox-focused treatments.
Gentle Stretching and Skin Mobilization

MLD requires subtle skin stretching rather than deep tissue manipulation. This technique helps open lymphatic capillaries and stimulates drainage without irritating the tissues.
Rhythmic and Sequential Flow Control

Therapists learn to maintain consistent rhythm and direction — always working proximal to distal (toward lymph nodes) and following specific drainage pathways for areas like the face, neck, abdomen, and limbs.
Breathing and Relaxation Integration

MLD often incorporates deep breathing techniques and relaxation massage principles to enhance circulation, reduce stress, and support the parasympathetic nervous system.
